With only 4 weeks to go until the third edition of the ADNOC Abu Dhabi Marathon, race organiser, Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC), and race title sponsor, the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), have revealed the 2021 medal designs and the first top elite athletes taking part in the race.
This year’s unique medal showcases the capital’s iconic landmarks and impressive architecture, which will provide the perfect backdrop for the event. Each medal is embossed with the logos of the event, Abu Dhabi Sports Council, ADNOC and the Year of the 50th, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the nation and the achievements of its people. The 2.5KM and 5KM medals commemorate the finisher’s achievement with the triumphant engraving ‘I Ran Abu Dhabi!’, while the other races include a declarative stamp of ‘Marathon Finisher!’, ‘Marathon Relay Finisher!’ and ‘10KM Finisher!’.
The organisers have also revealed four world-class elite athletes who will participate at the race. Female elite athletes include Bahrein’s, Chumba, who holds a world ranking marathon position of 65 and a personal best record of 2:23:10. Chumba achieved 2nd place at the 2017 Rotterdam Marathon and 3rd place at the 2021 Milano Marathon. Ethiopian born, Moges, will also be setting the pace with a personal best record of 2:23:38. Her career highlights include 1st place at the 2015 Beijing Marathon, 3rd place at the 2016 Valencia Marathon and 4th place at the 2021 Milano Marathon.
For the male elites, Kenyan born Kiptum ranks 16thworldwide in the men’s marathon category and holds a personal best time of 2.04.17. In recent years, Kiptum has clocked first in both the 2017 Buenos Aires Marathon and 2019 Hong Kong Marathon and placed third in the 2021 Milano Marathon. His worthy counterpart, Philemon Rono, also from Kenya, holds 10thplace in the global ranking, with a personal best time of 2.05.00 and was placed first at the 2019 Toronto Marathon.
Speaking on the recent announcements, His Excellency Aref Al Awani, General Secretary of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, said: “Once again, we are delighted with the large number of participants registered to participate in the race next month, reflecting the increased interest in adopting a healthier lifestyle and the continued growth of Abu Dhabi’s running community. This year’s medal has been elegantly designed to recognize and commend the efforts of all finishers for taking up the challenge and completing a race distance that suits their fitness levels. We continue to urge more members of the community to register and join us on November 26 for yet another fantastic race. Prior to the race, from November 22-25, a vibrant race village will be hosted at the ADNOC HQ Campus, welcoming participants,and supporters with photo opportunities, family entertainment and a dedicated race pack collection area.
