Surfing is known to be the ultimate sport that creates immense feelings of freedom and adventure, and the gnarly experience of walking on water. It’s also great exercise, endless fun and, just like any sport, requires training, dedication and a lot of practice.

At Yas Waterworld, guests can practice and learn this exciting sport by signing up to Flow Club. Taking place every Sunday from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM, Flow Club provides surfing lessons by certified trainers and lifeguards on Yas Waterworld’s surfing sheet waves, Rush Rider and Bubble’s Barrel, replicating ideal ocean waves at different intensities and sizes. This allows those who dream of surfing to take up the sport at their own pace, slowly ease into it with less intimidation and fear and improve their skills with more confidence and peace of mind. Additionally, Yas Waterworld’s certified surfing trainers have put together some top tips and tricks to further pace guests into what to expect and give them a head start on their exciting surfing experience!

A quick warm-up goes a long way

To have a more stable stance on your boards, work on strengthening your core by engaging in quick warm-up exercises and stretching sessions prior to hitting the endless sheet waves of Flow Club. Your trainer will teach you beginner friendly stretches that you can incorporate into your pre-surfing routine.

Stay calm

New challenges can be quite scary, so make sure to focus on your breathing throughout your time on the board, relax your muscles clear your thoughts and focus on your posture. Last but not least, don’t hesitate to ask for a break once you feel one is needed.

Take it one step at a time

Before riding the waves like a pro, one must first learn the basics of surfing while familiarizing themselves with their board. This starts with bodyboarding on the Rush Rider sheet wave, which is the smaller version of Bubble’s Barrel – the world’s largest surfing sheet wave. With the trainer, expect to lie on your abdomen as you hold on to the board with your hands and elbows until you get the hang of navigating up, down, left and right with ease. The next step would then be to learn how to slowly get on your knees with ease and once you have that on lock, you will then learn how to fully stand up on your board. Before you know it, you’ll be crushing waves on Bubble’s Barrel and enjoying a three-meter-high wave of roaring water at speeds of up to 70 kilometres per hour.

Safety comes first

If you fall off your surfboard in what is called a “wipeout”, your first instinct should be to cover your head. Don’t panic, the experience at Flow Club is as safe and fun as it can be.
