Some of the most popular characters from Arabic-language animation series – as well as the show’s creators – will be appearing at the MASmash 2019 event at Manarat Al Saadiyat from 6 – 8 February.
The fun-filled annual event, which is organised by Manarat Al Saadiyat as part of the Department of Culture and Tourism- Abu Dhabi, will explore the world of animation, its characters and the region’s developing video production industry through a series of fascinating workshops, engaging panel discussions and immersive performances.
The event will gather together animators and animation studios from across the Arab world, including creatives from Blink Studio, Lammtara and Cartoon Network, who will share their expertise and delve into the history and future of animation.
Alia Khalid Al Qassimi, Head of Manarat Al Saadiyat said: “Animation arts covers multiple industries. It is a creative world in its own right and holds deep nostalgic value for many generations. Arab animation gave us unique work in both the 1980’s and 1990’s that we will always remember with some of the most famous voice-over artists featured. At the same time, we will discuss the future of the industry that is undergoing important developments.”
MASmash 2019 will also include interactive workshops in Manarat Al Saadiyat’s Art Studio, and introduce visitors to the basics of animation and the steps for creating a production.
Visitors will also get a chance to meet a number of prominent Arab talents from the 1980s and 1990s who left a lasting impression on the world of animation, with participants including Jihad Al Atrash, the voice actor behind Grendizer, and the singer Sammy Clark, who performed Grendizer’s theme song. On the opening day, the two stars will participate in a panel discussion followed by a remarkable show in which they will relive memories of the famous anime series Grendizer.
On the second day of MASmash 2019, visitors will be able to meet Amal Hawaijeh, the voice actor behind Captain Majid, and Falah Hashem who voiced Adnan in the series Adnan Wa Lina.
The last day of the event will focus on the future of animation in the region through a series of interactive panels featuring animators from the UAE. The final day will also include a discussion on the much-anticipated animated movie Catsaway, which showcases the UAE’s modern animation industry.
MASmash 2019 will conclude with a spectacular show by Mohammad and Tarik Tourgane whose voices have influenced generations of Arab children. Performances will include the Arabic theme songs of the most famous series, with a special performance by Sammy Clark with the theme song for the new Emirati hero Azzam.
The event will include an exhibition featuring the work of up-and-coming Arab animation talents, and give visitors the opportunity to view award-winning animated movies from the region.
Tickets cost AED 50 for one-day admission and AED 120 for three days. Entry is free for university students.
