The Department of Municipalities and Transport – Abu Dhabi has granted a two-year grace period to owners of existing buildings that were built without building permits to rectify their status, in a move aimed at enhancing public safety levels in all facilities in the emirate.
The Department issued Circular No. (4) of 2024 regarding the “Grant for Legalizing the Status of Existing Buildings Implemented Without Building Permits in Abu Dhabi,” explaining that it granted a grace period of two years starting from this June for all property owners to legalize the status of their buildings and facilities by obtaining the necessary permits, as these procedures ensure the structural safety of buildings and their level of compliance with the approved standards for construction work in the emirate. It is worth noting that the inspection cycles concerned with building affairs and their conditions are ongoing and include all existing buildings in the emirate, in order to ensure the safety and security of all their users.
It is worth noting that the Department seeks, in all its activities and initiatives, to follow the best standards and practices of building control to enhance the quality of public life and ensure the interests of all concerned parties, specifically the owners of existing properties in the emirate, pointing out the importance of adhering to the laws and legislation in force and taking advantage of the grace period to correct the status of any building that violates these regulations.
All buildings constructed without a building permit before June 2024 will benefit from the grace period.
