With less than 24hrs left for triathletes to secure their spot on the start line at the 2021 TriYAS presented by ADNOC, participants Richard Backhouse and Jana Ramahi give an insight into the community event.
Richard Backhouse, who is ready to compete in his 10thTriYAS, commented: “TriYAS was my first ever triathlon and it was an introduction to the sport where I have since gone on to enjoy different events and distances in the UAE and overseas, so naturally, I’ve always had an affinity to TriYAS.
“The location and course itself are spectacular and logistics are very straightforward with great facilities. Coming back every year is somewhat of a testament of maintaining fitness over 10 years and I have the attitude that if I can do it, I will do it.”
TriYAS presented by ADNOC is always a huge highlight of the Abu Dhabi community calendar. With recent changes to government guidelines, the event organisers are pleased to now welcome over-60’s to participate in this year’s edition.
Athletes of all ages and abilities now have 24hrs to register for this year’s TriYAS, currently one of the largest triathlons in the UAE calendar for 2021.
Now in its 11th year, TriYAS presented by ADNOC attracts competitors to put their bodies through a challenging physical test made up of three elements – swimming, cycling and running.
There are nine separate categories at this year’s event, including the brand-new Duathlon Sprint, which involves a 5KM run and a 21KM bike ride, before coming to a conclusion with another run, this time over a 2.5KM distance.
Those entrants wishing to compete on an individual basis can choose from Sprint, Olympic or Super Sprint categories, but if you would prefer to be involved as part of a group, choose from Sprint Team Relay or Olympic Team Relay options.
There are two junior events returning for 2021, the first a Junior Triathlon which involves a 200m swim, 10km bike and 2.5km run, open to 10-16yr olds. The second, TriKIDS event will be open to younger children aged 8-14yrs old and features a 100m swim, 5km bike and 1.5km run.
Also returning for 2021 is Emirati triathlete, Jana Ramahi, who will be participating in her second TriYAS, commented on the event: “After participating in my first TriYAS, I’ve recommended it to many of my friends and family, telling them what a fun, well organised event it was which is why I’m also coming back for my second time.”
On October 15th, over 800 triathletes will take to the start line of all abilities from the elite to those competing in their very first triathlon. TriYAS has always been more than just the triathlon, the members of the local community and beyond gather to enjoy a fun-filled day in the sun surrounded by like minded people willing to push their bodies to the limit and achieve personal goals.
The action begins with the first event at 6.20am and there will be a break between the morning and afternoon sessions due to the high temperatures. Participants will be able to collect Race Packs at TrainYAS on Tuesday October 12 between 6pm and 9pm.
Registrations will close on Tuesday October 12.
The event will be open to spectators who are able to provide a green pass
