Following a rousing opening to the ninth season of Abu Dhabi Classics, acclaimed French pianist Lise de la Salle added further sheen to the event with her performance of the programme Dances on Saturday, 1 February. Held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, presented by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) and brought to you by du Live, Abu Dhabi Classics is the most influential and prestigious classical music programme in the Middle East.
De La Salle’s Dances, a brand-new creation that reflects a novel approach to classical music, explored dance rhythms from various times, places, and cultures. The performance incorporated timeless classical music mainstays such as Ravel’s Valses nobles et sentimentales, and also brought in authentic Latin pieces by Ginasteras and Piazzolla to create a unique melodic fusion. Just 29 years old, De La Salle has already carved a reputation for herself as one of the most exciting young pianists in the world and she was in full flow on Saturday, immersing the audience in an exhilarating amalgamation of classical music intertwined with fast pieces set to a foot-tapping rhythm.
Abu Dhabi Classics continues on Tuesday, 4 February with the renowned Hamburg Symphony Orchestra’s presentation of Tchaikovsky and Brahms at the Cultural Foundation. The Hamburg Symphony Orchestra will then move to the Emirates Palace, Abu Dhabi, on Wednesday, 5 February to celebrate the 250th birth anniversary of Beethoven with a stirring performance of the composer’s famed 9th Symphony. The 2020 edition of Abu Dhabi Classics then welcomes rising Egyptian star Sanaa Nabil to the Cultural Foundation on Thursday 6 February and will conclude with a season finale featuring famed Arab vocalist Magida El Roumi at du Arena, Yas Island on Friday 7 February.
