NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) Athletics will be posting weekly virtual yoga and meditation classes every Thursday, at 8am GST. Led by NYUAD Physical Education Instructor Miriam Maher, the classes will be shared once a week to help the global community maintain their mental and physical health, and will include various yoga and mindfulness practices.
The pre-recorded classes will be uploaded to NYUAD Athletics’ official Instagram account and YouTube channel. This initiative comes as part of NYUAD Athletics’ commitment to protect public health and ensure physical distancing in order to limit the spread of the coronavirus and support the UAE’s #StayHome campaign.
The classes will cover a diverse range of yoga and meditation techniques and exercises, including yoga for athletes, Yin Yoga, core yoga, stress-relief yoga and guided meditation exercises that help with maintaining mental health, focusing on different topics each time, such as emotional awareness and loving-kindness meditation.
Speaking on the classes, Maher said: “During difficult and challenging times, we have to do our best to stay healthy and maintain our mental and physical fitness levels by managing our thoughts and focusing on what we can change. We launched this initiative as an open invitation for people to learn practices and techniques that could help overcome challenges that they may be facing.”
She added: “Life lies in the space between action, when we take time to reflect we allow ourselves to become more aware and appreciate all the beauty that lies in front of us.”
Miriam has been working in Physical Education since graduating from the University of Limerick, Ireland in 2009.
