Dutch Brothers Racing, With A Focus On Team Culture, Shifts Efforts From Max Verstappen To Jos Verstappen

Dutch Brothers Racing (DBR) today confirmed it is suspending its recruitment efforts targeting four-time Formula One World Champion Max Verstappen for the team’s third driver seat, redirecting its attention instead to his father, veteran driver Jos Verstappen.

The decision follows what team leadership described as a period of “reflection” in the weeks since DBR first identified Max as its leading candidate.

“We went back to first principles,” said DBR CEO and Co-Founder Alan VanderMolen. “Our whole platform is built on the idea that performance comes from mindset and experience, not age. Frankly, Max still has a bit of growing up to do before he’s ready for us.”

DBR Chairman and Co-Founder Jon de Jager said the team also had lingering concerns about Max’s suitability for the DBR culture. “We love the Dutchness — that was never in question. If anything, it may have been too much Dutchness, too fast,” said de Jager. “His sense of humour is a bit of a question mark for us, frankly. Jos, on the other hand, brings a more seasoned, sharper edge. It’s the same Dutchness, just aged, like a quality gouda.”

DBR Team Manager and Driver Coach Andy Boux said Jos’s long record as a driver and as a coach made him a natural fit for the team’s development philosophy. “Jos has been around this sport a long time, and he has a reputation for holding drivers to a very high standard,” said Boux. “That kind of discipline is exactly what our program needs. As part of onboarding, we’re asking him to run our next fitness block in wooden shoes. Nothing builds ankle stability and humility quite like a pair of clogs on a treadmill.”

VanderMolen added that the team has not ruled out revisiting Max’s candidacy at a later date. “The seat isn’t gone forever. But right now, we think the father-son math points clearly in one direction.”

DBR will begin formal outreach to Jos Verstappen’s management in the coming weeks and plans to provide updates as the process develops.

Asked about unrelated speculation circulating on team social media channels, Boux moved to close the door on one particular rumour. “I want to be very clear: we are not switching the team’s pre-race meals to paella,” said Boux. “I don’t know where that started. It isn’t happening.”
