Lise De La Salle To Showcase Classic Delights And A New Direction For Music At Abu Dhabi Classics Brought To You By du Live

The UAE capital will set the stage for a new direction for classical musical when one of the genre’s most exciting young artists brings her talents to the ninth edition of Abu Dhabi Classics.

French musician Lise de Salle has established herself as an artist of sensibility and maturity, both of which will be on display when she performs Dances, at the Cultural Foundation, on Saturday 1 February 2020, as part of the the most influential and prestigious classical music programme in the Middle East, which features  a world-renowned line-up of talent.

An audience with Lise is something special and will experience the true emotion of a musician who puts ever into her performance. As Lise says: “If you feel on top of the world, your audience feels that as well, and anything is possible.”

Dances reflects a new tale on classical music by exploring dance rhythms from various period and locations. De La Salle’s performance will include Ravel’s Valse nobles et sentimentales, a suite of waltzes composed by Maurice Ravel, with de la Salle combining this timeless creation with Stravinsky’s Tango (which was written in the US), Bartok’s Romanian Folk Dances and Claude Debussy’s Mazurka, a Polish folk dance in triple meter, usually played in high tempo.

Her vast repertoire and ear for integrating diverse musical influences will also be showcased through pieces inspired by Argentine duo Alberto Ginastera and Astor Piazzolla, bringing in a strong Latin flavor, along with several showstoppers inspired by American dance culture including original compositions of George Gershwin, Pulitzer Prize-winning William Bolcom, and James P Johnson.

De La Salle has established her reputation as a progressive artist and garnered a worldwide following in just a few short years, through concert appearances with many major orchestras around the world and award-winning recordings. With her intense style and ability to blend in a host of musical influences, traditions and styles in her recitals, she has stunned audiences around the world.

Born on May 8, 1988 in Cherbourg, France, she was surrounded by music and started playing the piano aged four. She ffirst came to prominence in her country at the tender age of nine with a performance on Radio France, one of the country’s most popular radio stations.

Competitive success quickly followed for the ferociously talented musician, as she claimed the first prize at the Seventh International Contest of Ettlingen, Germany, aged just 12. Over the next few years, a string of accolades followed – including first place at the famed European Young Concert Artists platform.

She first came to international attention in 2005, at the age of 16, with a Bach/Liszt recording that Gramophone Magazine selected as its Recording of the Month. The Naïve label recording artiste was again recognised in 2008 for her recording of the first concertos of Liszt, Prokofiev and Shostakovich – a remarkable feat for a young musician.

Recent recordings include works of Schumann and the complete works of Rachmaninoff for Piano and Orchestra with Fabio Luisi and the Philharmonia Zurich, and a Bach-focussed record including the Italian Concerto, the Liszt Fantasy & Fugue on the Theme B.A.C.H. and the Bach/Busoni Chaconne.

Critics have praised Lise for “compelling playing, full of dynamism and precision”, while a Washington Post critic once wrote that “for much of the concert, the audience had to remember to breathe… the exhilaration didn’t let up for a second until her hands came off the keyboard.”

The Abu Dhabi Classics audience is in for a big treat.
