The Department Of Culture And Tourism – Abu Dhabi’s Creative Reader Competition Launches New Book Club

MAKTABA at the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has announced the launch of a new reading club for students participating in the Creative Reader Competition.

The Reading Club aims to encourage and facilitate debate and discussion about books between students and their peers, with the Club providing a platform for the students to talk about the books they have read, what they enjoyed about the works, as well as an opportunity to pose questions or enquire about the competition. The Club is open to students in two age groups, 6 to 10and 10 to 15 years old, through virtual sessions for each group, which will be held every Thursday until18th February, 2021.

“Book clubs provide a place for readers to exchange views and learn from one another and we are pleased to announce the launch of a club that will encourage participants to read and have the confidence to express their views about books they have read for the competition,” said Shaikha Mohamed Almehairi, Library Management Director at DCT Abu Dhabi.“This club will have a positive impact on the competition, helping students to feel part of the entire process.”

The Creative Reader Competition, hosted in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK), was developed to encourage public and private school students across the UAE to read more in both Arabic and English. Additional objectives include increasing visits to public libraries, highlighting the importance of the Arabic language, and supporting the creativity of students. The competition directs the students’ attention toward comprehensive community development, enriching the literary sphere and spreading cultural and societal values among members of society.

To participate, students must obtain MAKTABA membership and register for the competition through the website:ar.library.dctabudhabi.ae. They then should read as many books as possible over a two-month period, before completing the relevant form and submitting it before the deadline. Participants must also pass a personal interview to qualify for the second phase of the competition. The 2020/21 Creative Reader Competition will be held over three months.
